Swollen and enlarged veins that usually occur on the legs and feet. They may be blue or dark purple, and are often lumpy, bulging or twisted in appearance.47

Blood vessels that carry blood with little or no oxygen to the heart.48

A condition in which a blood clot forms in a vein, most commonly in the deep veins of the legs or pelvis. This is known as deep vein thrombosis, or DVT. The blood clot can break away and travel in the blood, to the lungs. This is known as pulmonary embolism, or PE. The term VTE includes both DVT and PE.49

A type of medicine known as an anticoagulant, often referred to as a blood thinner, which helps the blood flow through the veins more easily, making blood clots less likely.50
